Spatial soliton pixels from partially incoherent light.
We report what is to our knowledge the first observation of pixellike spatial solitons from partially spatially incoherent light. We created an array of as many as 32x32 soliton pixels by launching a spatially modulated incoherent light beam into a noninstantaneous self-focusing photorefraction medium. These solitons were stable and robust, forming a steady-state two-dimensional waveguide array...
متن کاملExperiments on induced modulational instability of an incoherent optical beam.
We report the observation of modulational instability (MI) of a partially spatially incoherent beam induced by seeding noise through cross-phase modulation. We show experimentally that a threshold exists for such induced incoherent MI to occur that depends on the degree of spatial coherence as well as on the strength of the nonlinearity. Above threshold, the induced MI leads to the formation of...
متن کاملModulational instability of partially coherent signals in electrical transmission lines.
We present an investigation of the modulational instability of partially coherent signals in electrical transmission lines. Starting from the modified Ginzburg-Landau equations and the Wigner-Moyal representation, we derive a nonlinear dispersion relation for the modulational instability. It is found that the effect of signal broadbandness reduces the growth rate of the modulational instability.
متن کاملTransverse instability of incoherent solitons in Kerr media.
We calculate the growth rate of the small-amplitude perturbations superimposed on a one-dimensional soliton that is fully coherent in the self-trapping dimension, yet uniform and partially incoherent in the other transverse dimension. Such solitons become transversely stable only if the correlation distance is below a specific threshold value. We show that this threshold for transverse instabil...
متن کاملModulational instability of spinor condensates
We demonstrate, analytically and numerically, that the ferromagnetic phase of the spinor Bose-Einstein condenstate may experience modulational instability of the ground state leading to a fragmentation of the spin domains. Together with other nonlinear effects in the atomic optics of ultra-cold gases (such as coherent photoassociation and four-wave mixing) this effect provides one more analogy ...
